Perhaps one of the most exciting water sports combining technique, agility with speed and fitness.
Recreational skiers usually learn to waterski with a ski on each foot and then as they improve progress onto a single ski (mono), placing the other foot into another binding behind the main one.
Beginners are usually pulled along at speeds of 18-22mph, whereas more experienced skiers are towed at speeds up to 36mph. Once confidence is gained it is actually easier to travel at faster speeds as this gives greater lift and stability. Within the confines of being pulled (towed) behind the boat, skiers can control their direction by balancing their weight on different sides of their ski, this is used to zip back and forth across the wake.
Recreational waterskiing is very similar to snow skiing, both activities incorporate the same body position and motion, the only differences are the shape of the skis, the bindings and the surface. Other variations of the sport are slalom, trick, jump, racing and barefoot skiing.
